Technical info, the choice of file format

It's not surprising that a photo website is all about presenting photos. But which file format to use? Traditionally, JPEG has been the format of choice. JPEG files are significantly smaller than the original RAW file and really any browser can display JPEG images. There are now two much better compression methods for image files: WEBP and AVIF. The WEBP format has been around for a while and is therefore supported by almost all browsers in almost all versions still in use. The AVIF format is even better. With the same file size, the quality is visibly better and with the same quality, the files are significantly smaller. However, as AVIF is somewhat newer, there are few older browser versions that do not understand this format. All widely used browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Edge) can display AVIF files in their current version - and even more so WEBP files.

I have opted for the following compromise: On the German-language pages, I use the modern AVIF format throughout. On the English-language pages I use the WEBP format. If your browser cannot display the photos on my German site, you can switch to the English version by selecting the language. I hope that you will then be able to see all the pictures. If this is not the case, please let me know by e-mail. If the problem occurs with many visitors to my site, I would consider switching back to the JPEG format. Before you write to me, please check whether there is already an update for your browser.
